2009 season review

Best batting performance:

With nine hundreds in the season this was always going to be tough choice. Keith hit four centuries, and Rob weighed in with two. Adam Button also reached three figures in a rare performance, but the voting for the best innings was tied between the other two centurions.

                        MARK SPROATS 100 VS MILDENHALL

Chasing a modest total the top order failed to get going and it was left to Spuddy, coming in at number 8 to steer the side home.

HENRY HAZLEWOOD 101 NOT OUT VS MISTLEY

H’y’s first divison 1 century was chanceless and faultless, finishing in style, bringing up the three figures with a maximum to win the game.

Best bowling performance:

There were several different performances with the ball that received votes. Mikey Worne’s impressive spell of quick bowling at Coggleshall, Ashan’s purple spell midway through the season that saw him win his place back in the 1’s, and as much as it pains me to say it Tony Gayfer’s 8 for 30 against Copdock in his only bowl of the season. There were also a few surprise votes for new spin duo Norm and Marshall, who have turned their occasional trundles into a regular occurance. However the most votes went to.........

GAVIN DRIVER 7 FOR 21 VS COGGLESHALL

There was no answer to the slope headed skippers spell on a usually batsman friendly wicket, as the home side were skittled out to set up a much needed victory.

Best piece of fielding:

It’s not easy to recall moments of inspiration in the field, but sometimes a piece of fielding can swing a game as much as a good spell of bowling or a quick fire half century. There were only a few names that were mentioned in this category. Spuddy with a fine caught and bowled against Exning, Matty Howlett with three direct hits in one innings at Woolpit on the opening day of the season, but the winner is...........

ALEX MARSHALL- DIRECT HIT FROM THE BOUNDARY

Worst piece of fielding:

The only category with a runaway winner! Everybody makes mistakes in the field, but when your fielding is so bad that your teammates are laughing even at a vital stage of the game, it has to be something special. This clear winner is........

                       PAUL BUDD- VS MILDENHALL

Fielding at cow corner the five foot two Tasmanian with the flared pants was looking to cut off 2 with the ball going straight towards him. Yet even with his low centre of gravity he was unable to bend down far enough to stop the ball as it went between his legs. Then instead of turning round to prevent the ball from trickling over the boundary he stop there shaking his head in disbelief.

Quote of the season:

An unusually quiet category this year, with only a hand full of memorable comments. Among them was the reporter at the Frinton game-“so that’s Marshall in the red helmet and Mildenhall in the massive helmet?” But the favourite came from a man of very few words...

                       YOGI BHATT- “GET HIM!!!!”

Grumpy arse of the season:

Several people have had their moments this year. A few toys were thrown out and dummy’s littered the pitch during the Sudbury game. Then there was Tony’s mid game boxing match, as well as Budd showing that he had no sense of humour when he found out what rotund meant. But the winner goes to a man who has shown true grumpiness throughout the season.........

                        KARL MILDENHALL

Duck club:

The one that nobody wants! Several people were in the running late on in the season, Karl making a late dash for the title with 3 in his last 5 innings. Rob, H’y and Jamie all had 4 as did the winner so on the countback of average throughout the season the title goes to...........

                       JOHN “TURBO” ABBOTT- 4 DUCKS
